AI Agents Explained: What They Are and How They Differ from Chatbots
AI agents don't just answer questions; they plan and carry out real tasks using tools. Learn how they work, how businesses use them, and how to start with them safely.
In recent years, AI has moved from "conversation" to "execution". Where a chatbot used to simply answer your question, so-called AI agents can now understand a goal, break it into steps, and carry those steps out using real tools and systems.
What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is a system built on a large language model, but equipped with three extra ingredients: tools it can use (searching a database, sending an email, editing a spreadsheet, calling an API), memory that keeps the context of the task and conversation, and the ability to plan and decide on the next step based on results.
Chatbot vs. agent
A chatbot receives a question and replies with text. Its job ends with the answer.
An agent receives a goal, such as "organize today's orders and send a summary to the manager". It reads the orders from the system, categorizes them, builds the report, sends it, and then tells you what it did.
How businesses use AI agents
- A sales agent that follows up with leads and sends personalized messages.
- A support agent that searches documentation and, if it can't find a solution, opens a ticket and routes it to the right team.
- An operations agent that monitors inventory and sends an alert or purchase request when stock runs low.
- A research agent that gathers information from multiple sources and summarizes it in a report.
Tools for building agents
Agents can be built with automation platforms like n8n, which offer ready-made AI Agent nodes that connect to tools and memory, or with frameworks like LangGraph for more complex agents with explicit decision paths.
How to start safely
Agents are powerful, so start with limited permissions: let the agent read before it writes, require human approval before sensitive actions such as messaging customers or changing financial data, and keep a log of everything the agent does for review. Start with one clear task, measure the results, then expand its scope gradually.
